A mid century Kuba cloth wall hanging C1950, which has been fully restored, maintaining its original hand embroidered edge detail.
This textile artwork is created from woven palm leaf fibre and originates from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It requires a lengthy process to create these beautiful ceremonial cloths. The weaving process takes many hours, after which the cloth is pounded to create a more pliable base. The cloth is then dyed using natural materials such as clay and mud to create the small palette of colours.
This cloth features traditional geometric shapes appliqued on to panelled lengths of cloth using strips of fibre. The cut fibre edge resembles small balls of velvet. We have had the cloth mounted on to a natural antique linen backing which has been channelled to take a wooden pole for hanging on wall.
